I got second class license

I started operating JF1IMD station in 1973.I wanted to operate on 20 meters

because the band was said to be the nicest to have DX QSOs.I was in the second

year in junior high school in 1973.I decided to get the second class amateur radio

operator's license.I needed to pass the examination. It was very hard for me

to understand theory of electronics as I was 14 years old.I bought a book

and tried to read as possible as I could. After reading it five or six times,

I memorized all the questions and answers.I did not think it would be enough

but complicated caluculations were too difficult to understand.

I memorized Radio Law, too.As for morse code, I had many QSOs on CW

and I was able to comprehend morse code at the speed of 50 words per minute.

I decided to take an examination in October. One thing that helped me was

a friend of mine who was thinking of taking the examination like me.He and I

handed in application for the examination. In October we took the exam

and I did what I could.I was not confident at all.In November the result came.

On that day
I was at my friend's house and was playing a game(Shogi).

I got home and knew
I had passed the examination.I got

the second class license.Soon after that I submitted application form

and I was allowed to operate
20 meters band.I started to have

QSOs on 14MHz but I found operators on
14MHz spoke

very difficult topic like electric circuit.I did not understand w
hat they talked.

In addition I did not hear many DX stations on the band.

That made me away from the frequency.I operated on 15 meters and

40 meters mainly.Still I sometimes listened QSOs on 20 meters and tried to

understand technical topics.I used 10 watts transmitter as before.

I did not apply for 100 watts because I could not afford to buy a new rig

or linear amplifier.I thouht of putting them together myself but it was

beyond my ability.I was happy to have QSOs with the rigs and GP antenna.

I thought I would get a high power rig and beam antenna some day.

It was my second year in my amateur radio operation.
